FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

INTERNATIONAL CELEBRITIES SUPPORT HARVEST AUCTION

From Alice Cooper to Anderson Cooper, the stars have aligned for Winnipeg Harvests’ 2nd Annual Empty Bowls Celebrity Auction to be held Thursday, November 9th live at the Niakwa Country Club.  Stars from every walk of life – actors Sir Ben Kingsley and Ellen Burstyn, authors Margaret Atwood and David Bergen, singers Sarah McLachlan, Dixie Chicks, Elvis Costello and Diana Krall, athletes Cindy Klassen, Mike Weir and Jean Beliveau – plus more! have autographed bowls for this unique fundraising event.

Leading up to the live auction, three autographed bowls are now posted on E-Bay with bids accepted from the general public up until Thursday night:  Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and NBA star Steve Nash.  Mitchell, an acclaimed artist, not only signed her bowl, she painted it, making it a Joni Mitchell original work of art.

Winnipeg’s Café 100 FM Radio has generously donated an acoustic guitar autographed by a plethora of talented performers including Neil Young, Steve Earle, Bruce Cockburn and Matt Dusk (to name just a few!)  which is also available now on E-Bay.  The public can view and bid on these items at www.parego.ca/harvest.htm

The idea for a celebrity bowl auction grew out of the successful Empty Bowls Project launched in 2004 in the Pembina Trails School Division.  School children create ceramic bowls and then serve a simple meal of soup to relatives and the community, all the while learning about hunger and poverty.  The soup bowls are then offered for sale in return for a suggested donation of $10.  The money raised goes to help Winnipeg Harvest clients.

“It’s incredible to think that in a few short years, Winnipeg school children have raised and donated more than $30,000 to Winnipeg Harvest as a result of the Empty Bowls Project,” said David Northcott, Executive Coordinator of Winnipeg Harvest.  “So far 40 schools have participated, which means that thousands of children in our community are directly learning about poverty and doing what they can to alleviate hunger.  Their care is contagious.  It gives us hope.”

The Winnipeg Harvest team gratefully acknowledges the support of our community partners in creating the 2006 Empty Bowls Celebrity Auction:  presented by Investors Group; sponsored by Purolator, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Parego Media Inc., Priority Alarms, Brush Fire Contemporary Ceramic Studio, Premier Printing, Ben Moss Jewellers, Café 100 FM, Don’s Frames Inc, EMI Music Canada, Warner Music and Natural Bakery Ltd.   Photography donated by Tim Hellsten and Peter Rohde.
