Winnipeg earns Guinness World Record for food donations

WINNIPEG, June 5, 2008 – On May 24^th of 2007 in Regina, Winnipeg Harvest issued a challenge to the Regina Food Bank to set the record straight on a new Guinness World Record for the most food collected in a 24-hour period. Regina owned the record in 2007, but it now belongs to us. Thanks to the thousands of donations made to our food drive last October, Winnipeg Harvest celebrates the caring spirit of our province.

Manitobans have gone above and beyond a world record-setting challenge by donating over 176 tons in one day, and by doing so, our community has earned the distinction of being officially recognized by the Guinness World Record organization. To mark the occasion on this the 3^rd annual National Hunger Awareness Day, Winnipeg Harvest and the campaign’s national corporate sponsor, Investors Group, unveiled the official world record certificate. Copies of the certificate were also presented to major participating sponsors including, Canada Safeway Ltd., Purolator Courier, Johnston Equipment, Enterprise Rent-a-Car, Polo Park Shopping Centre, and U Need Space.

Achieving a Guinness World Record required a tremendous amount of commitment, dedication and hard work by an enormous number of people. Winnipeg, and Manitobans who were part of the operation of the food drive, those who sponsored and supported the food drive and especially all those who donated food should be very proud of what they have done. Because of these efforts fewer people, fewer families and fewer children will go to bed hungry – and that’s the ultimate goal we strive to achieve.”

“The contribution that the community and sponsors engaged in to help us reach a world record is significant,” states Bruce Michalski, Corporate and Special Events Coordinator. “The food that was donated during that period filled the need for many months; the truth of the matter is our challenge still continues. The food collected from that world record has been distributed to our clients, through over 300 agencies across Manitoba. We still need Manitobans to remember to put a tin in the bin. As a community based organization, we continue to rely on the support of many donors, and we thank and recognize all those who have supported us in the past. We are blessed from your generosity in helping others, and we acknowledge that for many the food fight continues. Together as a community we will Fight Hunger and Feed Hope for many men, women and children who need our help, daily.”

The success of the World Record Food Drive was achieved thanks to the helping hands of many Manitobans, and through the participation of over 500 volunteers who donated their time during the 24 Hour period. The food collected has been provided to various Winnipeg Harvest agencies across Manitoba, including soup kitchens, food banks, meal/snack programs, shelters, and before and after school programs.
