manitoba's response to hunger
The need for supplementary food is greater than ever. So, too, is the community’s response. Rural communities in Manitoba are partners with Winnipeg Harvest in fighting hunger. Food insecurity is not just an urban issue.
- Rural communities donate tens of thousands of pounds of food to Harvest each year through food producers, farmers, wholesalers, grocery stores, schools, faith groups and individuals.
- Winnipeg Harvest shares emergency food with 15 rural food banks. There are approximately 48 rural food banks operating in Manitoba.
- In 2005, Winnipeg Harvest distributed almost 400,000 pounds of food to rural food banks.
- The Dairy Farmers of Manitoba support Winnipeg Harvest by providing children up to 12 years old with milk.
- McCain Foods Canada plants in Portage la Prairie and Carberry provide Harvest with almost half a million pounds of french fries annually for distribution at food banks.
- Vegetable producers, Peak of the Market, and Grow-A-Row gardeners throughout Manitoba donate almost half a million pounds of fresh and root vegetables to Harvest every year.
