Caroling for Cans
Caroling for cans is an event where students go door-to-door Christmas caroling in order to collect food and money for Winnipeg Harvest. This winter activity is good for students of all ages; elementary school, high school and university. Start Caroling For Cans at your school! Here’s how:
Winnipeg Harvest can provide the following:
Pickup of food
Winnipeg Harvest identification (stickers)
Coin cans for cash donations
You will also need :
Students to participate who will be divided into groups of 4-6
Christmas Caroling sheets – 2 to 3 per group
Plastic bags, wagons and/or backpacks to haul cans – 1 wagon and 1 backpack per group
One driver (parent, teacher or older student) to circulate in a vehicle and pick-up cans
Tips on how to make your event a success
Promote event with posters, letters, announcements, etc.
Draw out a route for every group indicating which streets they should hit to make sure two groups don’t do the same streets.
Following the routes you’ve drawn out, produce and deliver notices to houses to tell them when the carollers will be coming and what they are caroling for so that they may be prepared with food.
On selected date, gather group at a meeting spot (likely your school). Divide into groups and go on your way. Meet back at the same spot in about an hour in a half for hot chocolate!
